SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The oldest son of late Caddo Commissioner Joyce Bowman is planning to run for Shreveport City Council, a seat once held by his mother.

Jerry Bowman says he wants to continue his mother's legacy of having a voice for the people who live in District G.

Bowman, who grew up in District G, says he thought long and hard about his decision and feels this is the time. Joyce Bowman had a successful political career as a councilwoman and commissioner. She died in May 2013 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Jerry Bowman, 42, says he is ready to get his campaign started and plans to file paperwork to run for the office next week. Right now, there are no other candidates who have filed to run for Shreveport City Council, District G. The seat is currently held by Councilman Sam Jenkins, who announced on Friday that he is running for Shreveport Mayor.

Bowman's younger brother, Jerald, was appointed to serve out the remainder of Joyce Bowman's term following her death. He remained in the seat following a special election in October 2013. He has indicated that he plans to run again for the seat.
