SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Roland Orlando Jones has been promoted to deputy fire chief of the Shreveport Fire Department, the city announced Thursday.

Jones is a 38-year veteran with SFD. He accepted this promotion after Deputy Chief Tom Self retired Thursday. Self was with SFD for 36 years.

Jones was promoted from battalion chief, a rank he's held since January 2007. He was hired in 1976 and promoted to fire engineer in 1985. He became a captain in 1995 before his promotion to battalion chief.

Chief Craig Mulford is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation because of his connection to the scandal at Fire Station 8, in which several firefighters are accused of abusing a mentally disabled man.

Jones is the highest-ranking SFD officer and in charge of operations while Mulford is away.
