YASYNUVATA, UKRAINE (CBS) - At least three people were killed when a local market and two apartment blocks were shelled in the rebel-held eastern Ukrainian town of Yasynuvata on Tuesday.

Dirt, ash and debris covered the main market square in the town, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Donetsk, following the late afternoon shelling.

Shells also hit several residential blocks.

Residents worked together with firefighters in an attempt to extinguish the flames in the market, passing buckets of water and doused the smoldering debris.

One local man said he heard the explosions and then saw "the whole city center covered with smoke."

Yasynuvata is a current frontline between Ukrainian forces and the pro-Russian rebels.

It also holds a main railway link for those fleeing Donetsk, where the main train station has been closed due to frequent shelling.

Residents were concerned about the people left homeless after an apartment block was hit in shelling.

"Winter is coming, and the house is impossible to live in," said resident Dotsenko Pavel.

The attack came as the Russian government dispatched hundreds of trucks, which were said to contain 2,000 tons of aid bound for Ukraine.

The International Red Cross said they could not confirm what was contained in the trucks. The Ukraine government said the contents could be transferred to vehicles overseen by the Red Cross and delivered to eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine and the West have openly expressed their concern that Moscow intends to use the cover of a humanitarian operation to embark on a military incursion in support of pro-Russian separatists.

Men were attempting to extinguish burning local market kiosks, and men with buckets of water helped.

Smoke rose from burning stalls and goods were destroyed, and kiosks damaged.

Houses also were left smoldering and walls damaged.
