PROVIDENCE, RI (WJAR/CNN) – For a minister in Rhode Island, the Ebola virus has hit close to home.

Minister Sahr Kallon said one of his relatives in Liberia died after being infected with the fatal disease.

Another pastor in the church says her relatives also tell her they're fearful because of the outbreak. Now, Rev. Naomi Smith says she and others are rallying to get support for people in West Africa.

"I'm asking organizations, government here, every one of us to get involved in help to help the people," Smith said.

Kallon said the people of West Africa need help "with clothing, food and medicine for our people."

Sample doses of the experimental drug ZMapp are on their way to Liberia.

The death toll of the Ebola virus now tops more than 1,000 fatalities.
