The 18 wheeler fire on I20W at Fairfield Ave. Monday afternoon is believed to have been sparked by a tire blowout.
The tractor trailer fire slowed traffic down to a crawl, as firefighters worked to put out the flames.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Firefighters have brought an 18-wheeler fire on I20 in Shreveport under control, but traffic is still backed up as crews work to to make sure the fire is out and get the big rig off the road.
It happened just after 3 p.m. on I20 westbound near Fairfield Avenue. Traffic headed in that direction has been slowed to a crawl as a result.
SFD Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention Jimmy Hall says the 18-wheeler is loaded with frozen chicken. The fire is believed to have been sparked by the blowout of 2 tires, and contained to the rear end of the trailer. Without rubber on the wheels, metal on metal can spark flames. There were no injuries.
While the fire is now said to be under control, crews are still working to safely remove the tractor and trailer out of the roadway.
There is no estimate on when the westbound lanes of I20 will be flowing freely again.
