Shark attacks child in Lake Pontchartrain

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A shark attacked a seven year old boy in Lake Pontchartrain Friday. Trent Trentcosta suffered puncture wounds to his foot. His family says, the little boy, from Lakeview, is lucky to be alive.

Trent Trentcosta and his mom and friends were enjoying a day of sailing on Lake Pontchartrain Friday when they decided to go for a swim. While two to three miles off shore, little Trent was floating on a raft when he sensed something coming towards him. He explains, "I felt it charging at my foot."

Trent says he immediately knew a shark was attacking him. "I started screaming then I started wiggling and then I started kicking with my other leg, my good leg," said the second grader.

Trent's mom swam to his side as the shark let go. Shelli Trentcosta says, "Trent, I think he was completely out of it, just screaming, yelling, crying."

Trent describes the ordeal saying, "It felt like rows of knives sticking in my foot. When I pulled up my foot it was bleeding."

Shelli Trentcosta had her suspicions about what caused the bleeding, thinking Trent must've scraped his foot on an old piling. But a doctor at a local urgent care confirmed, it was a shark bite. "He was bitten on his big toe and on his heel so I don't know how many puncture wounds but you can see the rows of teeth on the heel and on the toe," Shelli explained.

A shark expert told our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, Trent was most likely attacked by a five foot bull shark. It's shocking news to Trent's mom, whose spent a lot of time in the lake. "I've always swam in the lake, we've never been bit by anything," said Shelli Trentcosta.

Shelli says she's grateful her son wasn't more hurt and thankful none of the other children swimming with Trent, were injured.

Trent Trentcosta is expected to make a full recovery. He didn't receive any stitches and must stay off his foot for a couple weeks until his wounds heal.
