LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
The key to building a winning football team starts from the inside out.
Offensive and defensive lines are crucial to a teams success. No matter the talent a team has at the skill positions, if the men up front can't block, the whole play falls apart.
Offensive line play shouldn't be a problem for the Red Raiders entering the 2014 season. In fact, the team calls it a strength.
"We got everybody back," quarterback Davis Webb said. "We have a chance at being one of the best O Line's in the Big 12. I don't think anyone is really talking about it which is a shame but they're going to find out August 30th."
It always helps when your offensive line boasts one of the best players in the country. Texas Tech has such a player in Junior Guard Le'Raven Clark. Voted a preseason All-American and 1st team All-Big 12, Clark is on the short list of Tech players who will soon be showcasing his skills on NFL Sundays. His presence alone makes things easier for everybody else along the line.
"I'm gonna have a preseason All-American right beside me so I'm not going to complain about that at all," Junior center Jared Kaster said. "That'll definitely be a plus for everybody."
"I don't buy into too much of the preseason stuff," Clark said. "it's just preseason. I just need to go out and give my all on every play."
Even better than having one great player along the line, is having several good players behind him. Texas Tech has the luxury of depth this season. Something that couldn't be said last year when injuries forced inexperienced guys into the rotation. Adding JUCO tackle Dominique Robertson was a big get for Texas Tech on the recruiting trail this offseason.
"Finally we have depth as an O Line," Kaster said. "We actually look like offensive lineman now. We look like a real O Line."
"I'm excited. We're a solid two deep at all the positions and we have some young guys working 3's now which is great for practices," said offensive line coach Lee Hays. "It would be nice to come up with a 3rd guard or a 3rd tackle we could rotate in a bit but we know who we have now and we're happy about it."
