After chase on land and through water, St. Tammany deputies catch 'Spiderman burglar'

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) -

A man dubbed the "Spiderman burglar" for allegedly climbing onto rooftops and burglarizing Tangipahoa Parish businesses was captured Thursday by St. Tammany deputies.

John Edward Green, 33, of Ponchatoula, was taken into custody shortly after 9:15 p.m. following a nearly four-hour foot chase from the Abita Nursery Subdivision to the Claiborne Hill area near Covington.

St. Tammany Parish narcotics deputies found Green walking in the Abita Nursery Subdivision Thursday shortly before 5:30 p.m. When he saw the deputies, Green took off on foot. Narcotics deputies were assisted by K-9 deputies, patrol deputies and members of the Street Crimes Division as they pursued Green through the subdivision and other nearby neighborhoods. At one point, Green broke into a local church trying to find a place to hide.

Green jumped into the Bogue Falaya River, dragging one of the K-9 deputies with him. He then tried to drown the police dog by pushing it under the water, forcing the K-9 to release its grip. When a deputy jumped in the water to help, Green pulled him under the water as well.

Eventually the deputy was able to surface and get handcuffs on Green, who by this time was naked. The deputy pulled Green from the river, and he was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries sustained during the chase.

He was then taken to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where he was booked as a fugitive from Hammond Police for failure to appear on a drug possession charge. He also faces attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted killing of a police animal, and burglary of a religious building.

There was no immediate word on bond.
