Weeden shines, defense struggles in Cowboys 27-7 loss to Chargers

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

As you would expect, there was some good and bad during the Cowboys preseason opener on Thursday night against  the San Diego Chargers. One of the bright spots was back-up quarterback Brandon Weeden. The former first round pick started in place of Tony Romo who was held out for precautionary reasons.

Weeden's impressive performance was important considering Romo could go down at any point during the year coming off a second back surgery. Weeden did his best work on the Cowboys second drive leading them on an 11 play 80 yard drive that ended with seven points. The former Oklahoma State quarterback finished 13 of 17 for 107 yards and a touchdown.

"He had good command," head coach Jason Garrett said. "I was impressed with his decisiveness. He seemed to get back and make decisions and cut the ball loose. I thought he moved around well when he needed too. Obviously he made a really good play on the touchdown you know moving to his right and throwing back inside, it was a really good throw I had a good view of it."

Weeden added, "I love it here. I love the group of guys we are going to battle with . Its fun and I enjoyed it."

Now to the not so good. Just like last year, the defense struggled. Now five projected starters did not play so you have to take that into account. But Dallas still gave up 395 total yards, which is slightly better than the 415 yards per game they gave up last season.

The cowboys allowed just over 150 yards rushing on 42 carries and they did not record a single sack in the game. And lastly, Dallas let the San Diego quarterbacks complete 14 of 16 through the air.

One positive was rookie safety Ahmad Dixon. The former Baylor Bear led the team with 11 tackles, but left the game with a concussion..

"Our gap control wasn't where it needed to be," Garrett said. "I dont think we got off of blocks well enough at any level. The defensive line level, the linebacker level and I dont think we tackled very consistently throughout the game. That's whatever group that was out there. Its a great opportunity for us as coaches to go back and point that stuff out."
