The Texas Department of Transportation is bumping up the finish date on a project they've been working on for nearly a year.
The intersection of Woodrow Road and US 87 was initially supposed to be finished around October.
A big push to have the project finished by the start of school could result in its completion by the end of the month, more than a month and a half earlier than the date they originally projected.
The overpass project started in September of 2013, but by the beginning of September 2014, construction could be done.
Dianah Ascencio with TxDOT says the opening of the overpass is coming earlier than expected.
"We are trying to get the bridge, the main lanes open by the end of this month or shortly thereafter." Ascencio says.
While a majority of the construction is contained to the overpass, the stretch of road near Lubbock-Cooper High School is also seeing some renovations.
"By doing this additional work, accelerating the work, we are hoping to open it up at least a month and a half earlier."
Ascencio says they were pushing for early completion to have the road ready around the time that school starts.
TxDOT will open one lane of traffic going in each direction while they continue projects on the overpass.
"We do want to remind motorists it will be an active construction zone and to watch for workers and equipment."
