United, Bridge of Lubbock helping needy students over Tax Free Weekend

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Tax Free Weekend continues through Sunday. This gives shoppers the opportunity to find great sales and discounts, and gives them a chance to give back to the community.

Lubbock Independent School District has teamed up with The United Family to collect school supplies for LISD and other schools in the area. Barrels are located at their stores until Aug. 12. Cash donations can also be made with the cashiers.

"This is just a perfect opportunity on Tax Free Weekend for people in our community to help students be successful in school by buying just one more school supply than you are going to buy," LISD Director of Communications Nancy Sharp said. "If you are a parent like me and your kids are out of school, pick something up, get back in the routine, and put it in the barrel at United Supermarkets, and help those students out."

"Instruction begins day number one, August 25," Sharp said. "When students come and they are not prepared for school by not having the appropriate supplies, they are already a beat behind, and we have no time to waste."

Sharp says 68 percent of students at LISD are economically disadvantaged.

"We know it is very important for those families to make decisions when they are trying to get kids ready and in clothes for school," Sharp said. "Making sure they have food and school supplies can really stretch the budget."

The Bridge of Lubbock is also asking for donations of clothes and anything that will help at-risk families in the area get their children ready for school. They will disperse these items on Aug. 23 at their Bridge Bash.

"We want these kids to know that they are loved and that, yes, mom and dad may not have it or grandma may not have it, but the community has your back." Director of Outreach Ashlei Watson said.
