Police responded to Delwood Drive near Akin Park in Longview after an officer-involved shooting on Thursday afternoon.
Longview police say the incident started as a traffic stop. A patrol officer was pulling a car over in the Akin Park area when, during the course of the stop, shots were fired. Police say the suspect was wounded and taken to Longview Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.
"I was in the backyard on my patio when I heard what sounded like firecrackers to me , I never would have thought it was gunshots because of the neighborhood," said neighbor Tony Hollins.
Longview Police Officer Kristie Brian said police don't know who fired first. Neither the identity of the suspect nor the identity of the officer are being released.
One neighbor believes he may have seen this suspect's vehicle in the park recently.
"Yes I know I've seen it once or twice sitting there but he don't stay very long," says neighbor Elvers Lacy.
The exact cause of the shooting is unknown. The investigation is being turned over to the Texas Rangers.
