Rep. Hensarling: 'Every county becoming border county'

RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Rusk County resolution approved on Tuesday would deny funding to house, educate and care for illegal immigrants and unaccompanied minors.

The approval came on the same day as a visit from Representative Jeb Hensarling, R-TX, who recently supported legislation that would expedite deportations and limit the housing of unaccompanied minors.

"Every county in Texas is becoming a border county, including counties in East Texas that I represent," Rep. Hensarling said.

Rusk County became the first East Texas county to approve a resolution addressing illegal immigrants.

Hensarling said he understands local frustration, and blames the White House for bad policy.

"[Citizens] look at a President that expects them to pay for benefits for illegal immigrants, so I understand their frustration," Hensarling said.

The resolution requests the federal government reimburse local agencies for all expenses incurred if illegal immigrants or unaccompanied minors were housed in Rusk County.

Rusk County Judge Joel Hale said, "We wanted to make sure our opinions and the opinions of our county residents was at least heard."

But, Hale added, Tuesday's county commissioner vote was largely symbolic and is not law.

Hale said that neither the federal nor state governments have requested that Rusk County house illegal immigrants.

"In our resolution is that if there was any intention to house minors or illegal immigrants in Rusk County, that they have an agreement in place," Hale said.

Last month, Smith County commissioners voted against two resolutions that would have had a similar effect. The Smith County Judge said those resolutions do not have any authority in the border issue.
