TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -

Leaders of the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department said they're seeing too many juveniles with misdemeanor offenses.

They said early intervention has proven effective in helping prevent such crimes, and this week the TAPD is helping make that happen with its annual "Personal Responsibility In Daily Effort," or P.R.I.D.E. Academy.

These are just a few of the more than 100 Texarkana youngsters who took part on Tuesday.

The lesson was about taking pride in the community.

"They teach us the meaning of pride and how it will help us during the school year," said Ethan Bounds.

"We are learning to help the environment," Brianna Stewart chimed in.

The kids spent the daysprucingg up Bramble Park, a city park located on the south side of Texarkana, Arkansas. The work was special for some like 10-year-old Shelby Dumphy, who lives in the area.

"I come here with my cousins and we would love to have this park cleaned up and I am glad to help do it," she said.

The P.R.I.D.E. Academy was begun by officers with the TAPD three years ago and has garnered national interest. Those involved say the academy prepares students for the regular school year.

"We want them to interact with one another because in the school setting sometimes they don't get that opportunity, although a lot of people think they do as far as working as a group," said Sgt. Joe Bennett.

"And here we got a lot of background that can come out and work together."

Organizers said about 125 fifth graders were invited to participate in this year's academy. Graduation for the group is Aug. 8 at North Heights Junior High School in Texarkana.
