Tuesday in Smith County, commissioners approved the partnership between the sheriff’s office and the Andrews Center Behavioral Healthcare System.
Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith says right now the county only has deputies that transport mental patients; however, with this partnership, they will have two specific deputies trained to deal with mental patients.
"We are very much at a deficit for civil beds, so many times we have to babysit those patients at the emergency room," Smith said.
Smith says now they are working to get two additional vehicles for the mental health officers. The officers will be put in place on October 1, 2014..
