Posted: Updated:

Kimberly Newman tweeted some important information about the algae bloom.

  • Heightened Harmful Algae Bloom intensity. As of 7/31, W. Lake Erie has a high concentration of the toxic bacteria.
  • This is the season of the HABs. Levels plummeted from 1960s-1980s, but saw a resurgence in 2008.
  • HABs greatest concern is when it occurs in fresh water, such as drinking water reservoirs.
  • Current algae bloom concentration is focused on the western edge of Lake Erie. Blue indicates low levels, red is high
  •  The concentration is limited now, but expected to grow. This is the bloom forecast for the rest of 2014
