Jury selection postponed for man accused of murdering ETX deputy

BOWIE COUNTY, TX (KSLA) - The trial of a man accused of shooting and killing an East Texas deputy in 2011 has been postponed. It was expected to begin Friday.

More than 1,100 potential jurors have been summoned to appear for the trial of 24-year-old Tucker Strickland. He is accused of killing Bowie County sheriff's deputy Sherri Jones, 54.

Jury selection was expected to begin Friday. It was postponed until September 3 because of personal issues with one of the attorneys involved in the case.

Jones was taking Strickland to a court hearing in April 2011, when Strickland overpowered her, took her gun and shot her. Strickland was being taken to a hearing to determine his competency to stand trial for assaulting his mother in August 2010.

He fled from the courthouse in the county transport van, but was caught about a half-hour later by police in Ashdown, Ark.

Bowie County officials held an emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss security at the courthouse to accommodate the large number of jurors. Pay cuts to county employees meant Friday would be the first day the courthouse would not have security officers posted at the door.
