BIRMINGHAM, OH (WOIO) -

Brody, 3, of Amherst, has a fascination with frogs.

What he and his older cousins found at Schoepfle Park in Vermilion is downright scary. They found used hypodermic needles -- and a lot of them.

"They were all playing in the water and the next thing I know, the kids are like look what we found," said Brody's mother, Tia Hilton.

"I saw this big jug floating," said her 13-year-old nephew, Tyler.

The floating jug was a liquid hand soap bottle with the used hypodermic needles inside.

"There had to be like 35 needles in there," said Hilton. "That's unacceptable. My 3-year-old is very curious. He would have grabbed that needle and put it right through his finger. This is not OK. What if they would have stepped on them?"

Hilton believes the bottle of syringes came from people who have been partying down by the creek at Schoepfle Park.

According to the family, someone from the Lorain County Metroparks told them they "caught other kids down there that week smoking weed."

It is particularly infuriating for Hilton, given the current heroin epidemic.

"Especially Amherst", she said, "is so bad with heroin; it's out of control. I hope this is a lesson for them to pay attention. You'll yell at my kids for catching frogs, but don't pay attention for things, like needles? How much sense does that make?"

Hilton is now calling on rangers to be vigilant in their patrols.
