TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

East Texas Medical Center has teamed up with "Believe and See," an East Texas organization, to help restore sight with cataract surgeries in the African country of Togo.

ETMC transformed an ambulance into a mobile cataract clinic for Believe and See. The organization performs about one hundred cataract surgeries per month in the remote villages of Togo in Africa.

Believe and See also educates for blindness prevention and provides agriculture training as well as spiritual support. The organization's founder, Lewis Swann, says the ambulance will enable his group to give the gift of sight to people half-way around the world.

He says this ambulance will travel thousands of miles each year to perform cataract surgeries. It will travel on a ship to Togo later this year.

ETMC team members also donated more than 400 pairs of sunglasses for patients to wear after the surgery.
