RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The focus of opening statements in the corruption trial of former governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen shifted to the couple's marriage on Tuesday.

Defense attorneys for the former first lady said the couple's relationship had begun to break down and Maureen was attracted to former Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams. They argued in court Williams used that attraction to dupe the first lady, lavishing her with gifts and leveraging their relationship to get closer to the governor.

Lawyers also revealed on Tuesday the former governor is expected to testify in his own defense. Bob McDonnell's attorney, John Brownlee, also revealed federal investigators traveled to California to interview Mitt Romney and his wife Ann.

Prosecutors say the McDonnells accepted more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from Williams in exchange for helping the Henrico businessman promote his dietary supplements.

Opening statements got underway on Tuesday and will continue with lawyers for the former governor laying out their case.
