Pistol-packing clerk scares off ETX would-be robber

A man who thought he'd go in and easily rob an East Texas grocery store Thursday morning ended up getting the scare of his life and leaving empty-handed.

It all happened around 11:30 a.m. at South Lakewood Grocery on U.S. 59 in Atlanta, Texas. A man walked in and asked the female cashier for cigarettes. She turned around to get them, and as she turned back around he held a knife up in an attempt to rob the store.

The man didn't know the clerk had a pistol within arm's reach.

She pulled the gun on the man, and he ran out of the store. Police are looking for him.

Cass County sheriff Larry Rowe commended the clerk for thwarting the robbery the way she did. Rowe said he believes in citizens having firearms to protect themselves.

"I just think she did a really great thing," Rowe said, and added that the clerk knew something wasn't right when the man walked in the store.

Neither the clerk or the man who tried to rob the store have been identified.
