Horse, boy struck by SUV on Shreveport street

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A horse has a few bumps and bruises Monday night after being hit by an SUV as the animal walked down a Shreveport side street.

The equine, named Sugar, was taking its teenage rider along the 1500 block of Clover Street at the intersection of Dowdell Street when a green Ford Expedition allegedly struck it.

The teen was knocked off the horse onto the ground, and he was not injured, police said. The horse and rider had the right of way at a stop sign when the hit happened.

Initially, police said the driver of the SUV fled the scene and officers were looking for the vehicle. However, later in the evening, the driver walked back to the scene where police were and turned himself in.

That man said he thought he had the time to go through the intersection before the horse did, but the animal sped up as he negotiated the crossing. He admitted to hitting the animal, but said he stopped to offer aid and the rider rejected it, according to police.

The driver was cited for driving with a suspended license and without insurance police said.

The horse had minor injuries to its right side around its knee. At last check, police were waiting for a veterinarian to arrive because the animal appeared to be emaciated. They don't believe it has a broken leg as initially reported.
