Louisiana's job market softened in June, as the unemployment rate rose for a second month in a row and payroll growth slowed.

The state's jobless rate rose to 5 percent from 4.9 percent in May. Louisiana's unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in June 2013.

A separate survey shows employers added 2,500 workers to payrolls in June. That's healthy growth and yet another record high, but slower than the big 8,500-job increase recorded in May.

Louisiana remains below the nation's 6.1 percent jobless rate.

Both sets of figures - adjusted to cancel out normal seasonal changes - were released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department.

The number of unemployed Louisianans rose by almost 2,000 in June to about 105,000. The labor force shrank, as did people reporting they had jobs.
