Terrebonne officials open of new school

Posted: Updated:

HOUMA, La. (AP) - It was a big day for parents and employees of the Terrebonne Parish school system as the district celebrated its first new school in 27 years.

Those who attended Grand Caillou (KIGH'-you) Middle School's ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday were anything but disappointed as curious visitors took to the halls to get a sneak peak of the $15.7 million building before school starts Aug. 11.

The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1zQcbBx ) the building stands 10 feet above sea level.

The school, which has a capacity to hold 450 students, is made of materials that are easy to maintain and clean in the event of a flood.

The old Grand Caillou Middle School building flooded seven times in recent history.
