Amtrak train, 18-wheeler collide in Tangipahoa

AMITE, La. (AP) - A passenger train and an 18-wheeler have collided at a crossing in Tangipahoa Parish.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards says a southbound Amtrak train from Chicago collided about 1:30 p.m. Monday with the tractor-trailer at the Diamond B Construction crossing on Highway 51 in Amite.

Edwards says the highway is closed in both directions.

He says a preliminary investigation shows the truck driver neglected to yield at the crossing, causing the train to strike it directly in the driver's side door. The driver was ejected. He's reported in stable condition at an area hospital.

The sheriff's office says none of the train's 193 passengers reported injuries. Officials say the passengers have been put on four charter buses for transport to New Orleans.

An Amtrak spokesman wasn't immediately available for comment.
