LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers says dredging of a 20-mile stretch of the Calcasieu River should begin the fall.

Army Corps spokeswoman Tracy Falk tells The American Press (http://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) the work will be done in two phases.

The first 10 miles will be dredged over a six-month period. The second stretch of 10 miles is projected for dredging in fall 2015.

Falk says bids for the first phase will go out later this month and should be awarded in August. Work could begin in September or October.

The contract for the second phase is expected to be awarded in summer 2015. The second phase also is expected to take six months to complete.
