Tumult at UT could hamper hiring of new leaders

Posted: Updated:

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - New certainty over when embattled University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers will resign still leaves a murky future for the flagship campus.

Former UT officials and academic leaders say years of high-profile clashes at the 50,000-student campus have taken a toll on its reputation. Powers reached a resignation deal this week that will keep him on the job until June 2015.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/1q7P1o3 ) that the tumult could make it harder to find both a replacement for Powers and a new chancellor to lead the UT system.

UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa announced his resignation in February but is staying on until his replacement is found. He had given Powers an ultimatum this month to resign or be fired.
