Firefighters responded Wednesday to a three-alarm fire Uptown.

The fire broke out at about 3:15 a.m. in the 800 block of Cadiz Street. New Orleans Fire Chief Tim McConnell said the initial emergency call indicated that people were trapped in the building, but when firefighters arrived, everyone was safely outside.

He said the fire started in a two-story, wood frame structure that was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, and it was spreading to an adjacent building. A second alarm was struck.

The adjacent building housed apartments upstairs and a sheet metal shop on the first floor.

A third alarm was struck to call in additional personnel due to heat and the size of the building, McConnell said. The fire was out by 4:15 a.m.

In all, two apartments were destroyed and two more sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage. Residents said the building where the fire started was under renovation and had electrical work done just two days ago.

One man had all of his belongings packed ready to move out. He said he raced out of the burning home only in his underwear. A woman living next door got out but couldn't rescue all of her pets.

No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross was on the scene assisting displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
