Residents to watch USS America sail from Ingalls

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - USS America, the newest amphibious assault ship built at Ingalls Shipbuilding, is scheduled to leave Pascagoula on Thursday.

Its next stop will be for its commissioning on Oct. 11 in San Francisco.

Ingalls officials could not confirm a specific time for the departure citing safety concerns.

Jackson County Chamber of Commerce officials are asking people to gather starting at 9 a.m. at Point Park in Pascagoula or the western-most area of Pascagoula beach.

The 844-foot-long ship was delivered to the Navy in April. Since then, the America has been docked at Ingalls to take on sailors and tie up loose ends before leaving.

Construction began in July 2009 at Ingalls. It was christened in October 2012.

It is the fourth ship to bear the name.
