Thieves break in through roof into south Nashville businesses
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
It's a heist straight out of a Hollywood movie.
Some crooks broke in through a ceiling and hit five south Nashville businesses at Priest Point strip mall in a matter of minutes around 4 a.m. Tuesday.
"They cut holes in the walls and that's where they were taking all the stuff in," said Gustavo Torres, owner of La Hacienda restaurant.
The burglar or burglars climbed down through the air conditioning vent and took everything they wanted from the Mexican food restaurant and then they broke a wall to get into the nail salon next door.
The burglars broke through cinder blocks to get from the nail salon to the old Cricket phone store, which is empty and up for lease.
That's when the wall-crawling crooks realized someone was home at their next stop.
"All of a sudden I heard this God-awful noise kicking in the wall and thought they were on the roof and they were kicking in the back door and that's when I called my husband and we called 911," said Barbara Starkey.
Starkey was up early for work at her family's bait and tackle shop. So was her dog, Penny.
"She's only a year old, but she's pretty tough," Starkey said.
The thieves had almost broken through to the back room when Starkey called 911.
"They were here in two minutes. They had this place surrounded," she said.
Metro police searched high and low, even using a fire ladder to look on top of the building, but just as the criminals slipped in, they managed to maneuver out of the shopping center without being seen.
"They didn't take much because we don't leave a lot of cash around, but the destruction is a lot," Torres said.
Police are still searching for the people involved in the break-ins.
