ETX firefighter en route to blaze injured in head-on wreck

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

An East Texas firefighter is in a hospital Monday night after being in a head-on collision on the way to a call.

Texarkana Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Norwood was driving his department-issued SUV in the 4700 block of Summerhill Road in Texarkana when he was struck by another vehicle, authorities said.

The wreck happened about 8:30 p.m., just 2 miles away from the scene of a house fire on Larry Drive, where Norwood, 42, was headed.

Reports indicate that the other vehicle, a white Lincoln Town Car, driven by James Collins, 32 of Texarkana, AR, was heading in the wrong direction at the time of the crash.

Police said Norwood had his Ford Explorer's emergency lights on when the wreck happened. Both drivers were rushed to CHRISTUS St. Michael's hospital and their conditions are unknown at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.
