TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -

Fire officials credit an alert resident for spotting smoke and flames coming from a Texarkana, Arkansas scrap yard on Saturday.

That fire was called in shortly before 3 p.m. at the Tri-State Iron and Metal Company in the 1700 block of East 9th St.

Smoke could be seen billowing up from the scrap yard.

Officials say a pile of recycled material, ready for the shredder, caught fire while the business was closed.

Crews knocked down the flames in about 15 minutes, and then stayed on scene for another hour to make sure no hot spots re-ignited.
