HOUSTON (KTRK/CNN) – A preacher is dead after confronting a burglar, and investigators say the murder weapon was the homeowner’s own gun.
“It sounded like fireworks - just some Black Cats," neighbor Rick Soto said. "We didn't think much of it - it being Fourth of July."
Other neighbors made that their first assumption early Friday morning as well and never suspected a confrontation involving gunfire in their community.
Around 1 a.m. Friday, detectives said 69-year-old Donald Frazier woke up after hearing noise in his garage. He saw a man and went outside.
"From what we're understanding, the homeowner actually tried to talk to the suspect for a little bit, trying to ease the situation," neighbor Brian Harris said.
The dispute soon escalated, and investigators said the burglar shot and killed Frazier as his elderly wife watched on in horror while dialing 911.
Just one hour earlier, security guards stopped the 30-year-old suspect because of his suspicious behavior.
Harris County, TX, detectives claim security let the man go after he said his mother lived in the subdivision, leaving neighbors to deal with the sad proposition that the shooting didn’t have to happen.
"It could have been a different story if it was an actual police officer who stopped the suspect at midnight," Harris said.
Police haven’t specified how the shooter got the homeowner’s gun, and the shooter’s identity hasn’t been released.
