SPD reminds residents not to fire guns in celebration of Independence Day

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - As Shreveport residents gear up for the July 4 holiday Friday, Shreveport police urge residents not to fire celebratory gunshots in the air.

SPD says the act of shooting firearms within city limits is not only very dangerous, but also illegal.

During the next several months, officers will be cracking down on illegal possession and use of firearms. The goal of this operation is to reduce the number of incidents involving gunfire.

Officers will be patrolling local streets this holiday weekend in an aggressive, proactive effort to find those who are firing guns. They say anyone caught doing so will be arrested and put in jail. Anyone who sees someone firing a gun is urged to call 911.

Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of a person who is illegally in possession of a long gun, such as a rifle and shotgun. They are offering $250 for information leading to the arrest of a person illegally possessing a handgun. Call Crime Stoppers at (318)673-7373 or visit www.lockemup.org
