World Cup craze powering American Outlaws

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

There's no doubt the U.S. Men's Soccer team has united the country, but it hasn't been running on its own steam.

A group called the American Outlaws has been kicking up dust to draw attention to the team. Formed in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2007, its main focus is to galvanize current and new fans.

This year's World Cup has underscored a new chapter of the Outlaws in Shreveport/Bossier. The group recently took over Rotolo's Pizzeria in Shreveport during the Americans' last game against Germany.

When you hear the name" American Outlaws," the first thing that may come to mind is a group of troublemakers from the Wild Wild West. But, these outlaws are group of rowdy, but fun loving soccer fans.

The Outlaws have over 140 chapters in 40 states. James Gilcrease is a member of the Shreveport-Bossier Outlaws chapter.

"We started out with probably like 12 members and now we're up to like 55-56 members, Gilcrease said. "I was like that's insane!"

From all of the face paint and patriotic outfits seen during the U.S. versus Germany game, that number has far exceeded expectations.

Adam Hester helped form the Shreveport-Bossier chapter. Hester says,

"I figured back then, man, there's got to be 25 people in Shreveport/Bossier who love the U.S. soccer team,"ester said. "Even if it's every four years, that would be willing to get in on this."

The American Outlaws will host watch parties at the Rotolo's Pizzeria in Shreveport for each USA World Cup game. For more information on how to join the American Outlaws click here.

"I've never seen this many people, you know, join together to root on one team," Gilcrease said.
