Police have confirmed that a woman was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Shreveport's MLK neighborhood.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Shreveport police have identified the woman shot and killed over the weekend in what is believed to have been a domestic dispute that turned deadly, but they say they've released the man initially detained as a possible suspect.
The shooting happened just before 2 p.m. Sunday the victim's home in the 3200 block of Sidney Street. The woman, now identified as 55-year-old Ruby Barnette, was shot once in the chest. Barnette was taken to University Health Shreveport where she was pronounced dead.
Police say there were at least three other people inside the house at the time, including an adult male who was taken in for questioning, as well as a child. The man detained for questioning and now released has not been identified by police.
According to police, information gathered during the early stages of the investigation suggested a verbal argument had broke out between parties inside the home, which turned physical and led to weapons being produced. Based on information gathered, investigators do not believe Barnette was the intended target of the shooting and suspect she many have been shot during a struggle over a handgun.
"This is the first time anything like this has happened on our street," said neighbor Thelma Humphrey, who knew the victim well.
"I don't know why this would happen," she said. "I don't even know what was going on because I was inside the house."
