GULFPORT, MISS (WVUE) -

Chiquita is getting more time to wrap up business in Mississippi as it prepares to move to New Orleans.

The banana company will stay another six months at the Port of Gulfport.

That city's port authority board members were tied on the issue, but the chairman broke the tie Thursday in favor of the extension.

"Everybody got their feelings hurt because when Chiquita left, they didn't treat us very well," said port Chairman John Rester. "But I'm really not concerned about that. My concern is that we allow the longshoremen, the stevedores, the people who work down there every day the opportunity to get as many hours working as they can."

The Sun Herald reports the extension doubles the company's rent to more than $50,000 a month.

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced last month that Chiquita's return to the Port of New Orleans would create 350 new jobs.
