SABINE PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

A Sabine Parish colt is recovering at the humane society after he was viciously attacked by a dog earlier this week.

Employees there are giving him medicine, lots of love, and washing his wounds. The colt is now calling the animal shelter at 520 McDonald Drive in Many, his new home.

The owner of the two-month-old equine, which the shelter named "Iron Man," handed him over to the humane society after he was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull who got out of his yard.

"Of course we were all a little horrified, it was pretty bad," said Lisa Butler of the SPHS. "But not so bad that it can't heal. The vets instructed us to wash him daily with a water hose once a day and clean out the wounds."

The dog left behind large, gaping, open wounds that the vets were not able to sew up.

"He's doing fine, he doesn't seem to be in any pain," Butler said. "In fact, when we walked out earlier, that was the first time I've heard him nicker. I think he's getting happy and he's seeing that we're caring for him and we love him and he's going to make a full recovery."

The colt does seem happy, and even the sound of barking dogs inside the shelter doesn't bother him, despite his canine attacker.

"The pit bull got out and the little horse was tied on a rope, it had nowhere to go," Butler said.

Police said the dog is locked up but still on the owner's property. In the meantime, the shelter is looking after Iron Man until they find him an adoptive family.

"You look at it and you think, 'Oh my gosh, that's going to be a horrible scar!' But it'll look good. You'd be surprised, probably in three or four weeks, what he'll look like," Butler said.

If you want to adopt or foster Iron Man, contact the Sabine Parish Humane Society.
