Shreveport, Bossier City fire departments offer fireworks safety tips

Posted: Updated:

As residents gear up for the July 4 holiday, fireworks stands are popping up all over the ArkLaTex.

Fireworks are already on sale in Shreveport and go on sale in Bossier City at 10 a.m. Saturday. Authorities from the Shreveport and Bossier Fire Departments released safety tips for residents to remind them to have a fun, but safe holiday.

They remind residents that fireworks can cause injuries severe enough to result in dismemberment, fractures, vision loss and even death.

Here are 10 more tips from the two departments:

  • Read and follow all warnings and instructions.
  • Always discharge or use fireworks outdoors away from homes, any flammable materials, and onlookers.
  • Be aware of dry conditions. Never ignite fireworks on or near dry vegetation. Doing so could spark fires.
  • Always have a bucket of water or garden hose nearby for extinguishment of fireworks that do not go off or in case of a fire.
  • Never shoot off fireworks in a container or indoors or other enclosed areas such as carports.
  • Always have adult supervision during fireworks activity and never allow small children to handle fireworks.
  • Never mix the use of alcohol and fireworks.
  • Always discharge fireworks one at a time.
  • Never attempt to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks
  • Use a "punk" to ignite fireworks. Never use an open flame such as a cigarette lighter or match.
An Independence Day Festival will be held at Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport.

In Shreveport-Bossier, fireworks can only be set off each day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through July 5.
