Reds win fourth straight series

(FOX19) -

By Brett Bibbins

The Cincinnati Reds (39-38) won their fourth straight series as they knocked off the Chicago Cubs (32-44) by the score of 4-1 Wednesday night.

Cincinnati has now won two out of three games in five out of the last six series.  The Reds have not lost a series since the first week of June, when they only won a single
game in a three game series against the San Francisco Giants (46-32).

Starting pitcher Mat Latos (1-0) picked up his first win on the year, in three tries, going seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, striking out five and not walking
a single batter.  Latos moves to 6-2 all time against the Cubs, including a 4-0 record at Wrigley Field.

"It was great to see Mat Latos have a big start out there for us.  He really attacked the zone," Reds' manager Bryan Price said.  "He really had the full arsenal going."

The Redlegs' offense provided more run support than Latos needed, on the strength of Jay Bruce's two double,  two RBI game, as well as an RBI double from Joey Votto and an
RBI on a suicide squeeze from Skip Schumaker.  Schumaker started his third straight game as everyday starting second baseman Brandon Phillips remains sidelined with a bruised heel.

"I felt pretty good. He's got some good pitches, so you have to take advantage of the mistakes he makes," Bruce said of Chicago starting pitcher Edwin Jackson(5-8).  "I was
able to take advantage of some pitches up in the zone."

Devin Mesoraco's homerun streak ends at five games, tying a Reds' ffranchise record, and Billy Hamilton's hit streak ends at 12 games, the longest of his young career.  Reds'
closer Aroldis Chapman pitched the final inning, earning save number 14 on the year.  Chapman has now converted 12 straight save opportunities and 14 of 15 overall.
