SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Former President Jimmy Carter will visit Shreveport this fall to help a local organization mark two decades in the community.

Carter is scheduled to be in the city to help Community Renewal celebrate its 20th anniversary. He is expected to tour Community Renewal's Friendship Houses and speak at the organization's anniversary celebration at Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.

After serving as the 39th president of the U.S., Carter and his wife have been working with community improvement organizations. They founded The Carter Center, a nonprofit, nonpartisan center that focuses on national and international issues of public policy.

Community Renewal's founder Mack McCarter has been working in Washington, D.C. to help expand the organization to the capital area. He has been meeting with Carter and said he's coming to Shreveport to see firsthand the organization's impact on the area.

The 2014 House for Hope helps Community Renewal build a new Friendship House, a haven of hope in low-income, high-crime neighborhoods.

Like a community center in a home, a Friendship House is a place for after-school education programs, character building, service projects, GED courses, tutoring, computer training, art and music lessons and family nights.
