SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Former President Jimmy Carter is in Shreveport-Bossier to help a local organization mark two decades in the community.

Carter was the keynote speaker for Community Renewal International's 20th anniversary celebration at Shreveport Municipal Auditorium Thursday night, after touring local Friendship houses. He started his speech saying this is a day he will never forget.

After serving as the 39th president of the U.S., Carter and his wife have been working with community improvement organizations. They founded The Carter Center, a nonprofit, nonpartisan center that focuses on national and international issues of public policy.

Community Renewal founder Mack McCarter and former Navy Secretary John Dalton have been working in Washington, D.C. to help expand the organization to the capital area. McCarter says Carter's visit to the Shreveport gives him the opportunity to see firsthand the organization's impact on the area.

KSLA News 12 is a partner with Community Renewal International on the annual House for Hope project, which helps build a new Friendship House designed to be a haven of hope in low-income, high-crime neighborhoods.  The former president said in order for continued success he told the audience, "What it needs is more support from corporations, gaming establishments, and everyone in this community that has great economic and social influences."

Like a community center in a home, a Friendship House is a place for after-school education programs, character building, service projects, GED courses, tutoring, computer training, art and music lessons and family nights.

According to Community Renewal, crime has significantly dropped in the neighborhoods with Friendship Houses. This includes Cedar Grove, Highland, Barksdale Annex, Queensborough, and Allendale; each of these neighborhoods has two Friendship Houses, totaling 10 altogether.
