A former lifeguard was honored Tuesday for rescuing a teenage girl from the bottom of an apartment pool earlier this month.

Shreveport fire chief Craig Mulford awarded Cordero Mullone the fire department's Citizen Life Saving Award at the city council meeting Tuesday night.

On June 7 Jasmine Taylor, 15, hit her head on the side of the pool at the Millbrook Apartment complex and quickly sank to the bottom.

After being underwater for up to five minutes, Mullone, a passerby, jumped into the water and rescued her.

"He was able to resuscitate Jasmine to the point where she began shallow breathing by the time fire crews from Fire Station 5 arrived," Mulford said.

Mullone was trained by the Red Cross and was a lifeguard at a city pool. Taylor is going into her sophomore year at Green Oaks High School. She reportedly sustained no brain damage.
