Some big changes are in the works for the annual Montgomery Half Marathon. The race, which has been held the first or second Saturday in October for the past 5 years, will be moved to March 14, 2015. The new race weekend will feature the city's first ever full marathon, in addition to the half marathon, 5-K, and one-mile fun run.
Steve Jones, Director of General Services for the City of Montgomery, says he believes it will improve the popularity of the race. "Runners will not have to train during the hottest months of the year, and it will help draw in marathon runners who compete in other marathons in the state like Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile," said Jones.
"The race is not going away; it's just been moved. And from here on out, these races will always be in March," Jones added.
Runners who have already registered for the October race will receive a full refund. An announcement about the naming and sponsorship of the March 2015 race weekend will be made in the coming days.
The Montgomery Half Marathon and 5K was first created back in 2009, and has attracted more than 1,000 runners and walkers to the Capital City each year.
