How the news is made at WAFF-48

On a typical week, WAFF-48 produces 31 hours of local news coverage.

Our commitment to cover the Heart of the Valley goes far beyond the faces you see on your screens each day; there are many people behind the scenes working tirelessly to keep you informed on-air, online and on mobile.

Hours before any single newscast airs, there are a team of producers writing stories, taking information from press releases, police reports and viewer tips. Photojournalists accompany our reporters or go out into the field on their own, shooting video from the scene.

Editors cut down the video into the "packages" you see on-air each day. The material may not just be from local stories; they also edit the material from national news outlets, such as NBC and CNN.

A lot of credit must go to our studio crew, who are constantly on the move helping make each show. They do everything from making sure scripts are printed and passed along to our anchors to running the three cameras in our studio, which often have to change positions several times each half-hour.

The studio is also home to a computer which operates the teleprompter. A studio crew member operates this computer, which feeds the most updated version of a news script to a screen viewable by our anchors and in-studio reporters. This is very important in case of last-minute changes or breaking news situations.

Our teams in Master Control and the production booth work together for every live broadcast. Master Control, the "nerve center" of the station, helps coordinate live shots from our reporters in the field. They are also tasked with making sure we get NBC network, Bounce TV, and syndicated programming that you see throughout each day.

During the newscasts, the production booth is manned by a director, a producer, a graphics operator and an audio technician, who all make sure necessary changes make it to air.

We have a staff of technicians on stand-by in case there are any technical problems that need to be addressed at any time. They are ready to do anything from change a studio light to troubleshoot a problem with audio or video equipment.

Back in the newsroom, our web staff is constantly writing stories which show up on and the 48 News mobile app. They also post breaking news and updates to social media and clip videos from our newscasts to help tell the web story.

Dozens of people help make the news here at WAFF-48, and we thank them – as well as the hundreds of others that have worked at this television station the past 60 years.
