BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Center Point man is in jail for allegedly vandalizing church properties and other buildings across Jefferson County.

Eja Cree, 31, is accused of spray painting what he said was a message from the Holy Spirit, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Cree told police that he repeatedly sprayed "memeneusha" and it meant "Jesus is coming," a release from the Sheriff's Office said.

Cree was arrested early Friday night and charged with first degree criminal mischief. He's being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

Cree's family says he recently checked himself out of a facility where he was receiving treatment for mental illness, and they believe he's been off his medication.

"I don't doubt that he heard that voice tell him to warn the people. But what it is not is a hatred to the church or toward Christians or toward the government," Cree's uncle, Steve Birmingham, said.

More charges are expected to be filed against Cree. The investigation is still ongoing.

The following locations were vandalized:

-Garywood Assembly of God, Hueytown

-St. Luke AME Church, Hueytown
