Name of the game: Shreveport lacrosse camp garners awareness of sport

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and some ArkLaTex crosse wielders players had the opportunity to experience it from a different perspective.

Tom Marachek is a big name in lacrosse, and last week he worked with some Shreveport students on perfecting their game.

"This is a sport that athleticism helps yeah, but if they can get the stick in their hand at this early age it's going to make them better players by the time they get to high school," Marachek said. "Work is everything, catching and throwing is not easy right away."

Although it was a bit warm outside it didn't stop these players from learning.

"I've been doing this for two years and they've helped me out a lot and I really get what their saying. I've learned how to pass. I've learned how to shoot. I've learned everything," said student Dylan David.

Marachek said a lot of kits get discouraged when they lack skill early on and so practice makes perfect.

"It's really hot out here though," said Will Weaver. "But it's really fun and I get to learn the experience of lacrosse and they get to teach you everything that you need to know to play the game of lacrosse."

Marechek brought along his friend Risto Worthington, who will be headed to his third lacrosse world cup.

"The kids are so thirsty to learn more and new things so when you say something they are listening and you can tell they're processing and they're doing what you've asked them to do, even if it's not perfect they are trying," said Worthington.

Benjamin Whaley had a message for any young athlete wanting to play the sport of lacrosse.

"It's really fun here," he said. "You should come next summer. It's awesome. You can go to You get a free head and stick just like mine. It's awesome."
