Perry also requested 1,000 National Guard troops, as well as helicopters to help patrol the border. In addition, Perry asked that President Obama allow the National Guard to utilize Predator drones along the border to help identify and track human and drug traffickers.
"The problem remains our porous border and federal policies encourage, rather than discourage, illegal immigration," said Perry. "All these problems and solutions are the responsibility of the federal government, but Texas cannot idly by waiting for a resolution while our communities become overwhelmed by illegal immigrants and their basic necessities of food, shelter and sanitation."
On Wednesday, Perry authorized the Department of Public Safety to conduct law enforcement operations to fight back against criminal activity associated with illegal immigrations. Perry said the effort will cost taxpayers around $1.3 million per week.
In his letter to the president, Perry also asked that the Centers for Disease Control conduct inspections of facilities in which illegal immigrants are being housed to ensure that accepted international and national emergency sheltering standards are met
