SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport firefighter Joshua Mcrae popped the question to his longtime girlfriend at the Basic Training Graduation Thursday night.

The graduation ceremony certified 22 graduates as Firefighter I & II in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Standards.

"She is my best friend," Mcrae said. "We do everything together and I love her with all of my heart."

Mcrae said he bought the ring six months ago and waited until a moment his girlfriend, Sierra Smith, would least expect it.

"It was just meant to be," Mcrae said about their seven-year relationship.

Right before the closing of the graduation, Smith was called onto the stage, where he bent down on one knee and asked Smith to be his bride.

"He did it the perfect way though, just perfect," Smith said.
