Delta Air Lines has serviced people flying into and out of Shreveport for more than eight decades, and Tuesday, local officials celebrated that milestone.

Shreveport Regional Airport hosted a ceremony in honor of the airline's 85 years winging in and out of the Port City. As Shreveport's largest carrier, Delta served more than 200,000 passengers in 2013.

Red and blue balloons, Delta's signature colors, decorated areas in the airport and cupcakes were given to passengers and celebrants.

Mayor Cedric Glover proclaimed June 17 "Delta Air Lines Day" in his city.

"We are proud to be one of Delta Air Lines' initial cities in its route network, and we continue to enjoy a strong and beneficial relationship with Delta as our most flown airline carrier," said Bryant Francis, director of airports for the Shreveport Airport Authority.

Delta began air service in Shreveport in 1929, in an open field near the Red River. Its original route was Dallas, Shreveport, Monroe and Jackson. Shreveport served as a mini-hub for Delta and in the 1970s and 1980s

On July 2, Delta will reintroduce its mainline service with daily nonstop flights to Atlanta. And they'll be offering some amenities not seen here in a long time.

Each Boeing 717 airplane will include first class and economy comfort seats. This is Delta's first mainline service in 12 years and the first time in seven years first class has been offered in this market by any carrier.
