Shreveport man thankful for fan to keep cool this summer

One fortunate Shreveport senior will be staying a lot cooler this summer now that he has a fan to circulate the air and create a breeze.

Today, KSLA News 12's Storm Tracker team got a chance to hear his sigh of relief when we joined the Council on Aging to deliver a fan to DeJuan Smalls' Home.

"Yeah, it's going to keep me kind of cool. It's already getting warm inside the house, so I'll really appreciate this fan," he said.

According to the National Institute on Aging, staying in a hot environment for too long can lead to several health conditions, including heat stroke. The signs of this potentially deadly situation are:

  • Fainting
  • Body temperature greater than 104 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Change in behavior, such as confusion, grumpiness, acting strangely or staggering
  • Dry, flushed skin and a strong, fast pulse or slow, weak pulse
  • Not sweating, even in the heat, acting agitated or falling into a coma

People over age 50 are encouraged to stay in a cool place and use air conditioning and/or fans to keep from overheating.

We want to make many more seniors without fans happy as well this summer. If you want to get in on the KSLA News 12 fan drive, it's pretty easy. We've teamed up with the Caddo Council on Aging to collect fans now through Labor Day.

You can drop your fans off here at the station at 1812 Fairfield Avenue in Shreveport.

Let's keep our area seniors cool!
